Common Uses of Norplant:
This medicine is a progestin used to prevent pregnancy.

How To Use Norplant:
This medicine comes with a patient information leaflet. Read it carefully. Ask your doctor or nurse any questions that you may have before receiving this medicine. This medicine is inserted under the skin of your upper arm by your doctor. The procedure usually takes 10 to 15 minutes. The incision site is then covered with a protective bandage. Be careful not to bump the insertion site. Keep it clean and dry for 3 days.

Norplant Cautions:
THE CAPSULES MUST BE REMOVED AT THE END OF 5 YEARS. At that time, the medicine becomes less effective and may not prevent pregnancy. SMOKING CIGARETTES while using this medicine may increase your risk of stroke, heart attack, blood clots, high blood pressure, or other diseases of the heart and blood vessels. Do not smoke cigarettes while you are using this medicine. IF YOU WEAR CONTACT LENSES and develop problems with them, contact your doctor. THIS MEDICINE MAY CAUSE dark skin patches on your face. Exposure to the sun may make these patches darker. If patches develop, use a sunscreen or protective clothing when exposed to the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE if you are pregnant. IF YOU SUSPECT THAT YOU COULD BE PREGNANT, contact your doctor immediately. THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED IN BREAST MILK. IF YOU ARE OR WILL BE BREAST-FEEDING while you are using this medicine, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.

Possible Side Effects of Norplant:
SIDE EFFECTS, that may go away during treatment, include changes in your menstrual periods, breast tenderness, nausea, acne, skin discoloration over the implant site, pain or itching at the implant site, or weight gain. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you experience difficulty sleeping, fatigue, mood changes, heavy menstrual bleeding, finger or ankle swelling, headache, growth of new body or face hair, hair loss, breast lumps, yellowing of skin or eyes, or expulsion of a capsule. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience sharp or crushing chest pain; sudden shortness of breath; sudden leg pain; sudden, severe headache or vomiting; dizziness or fainting; changes in vision; numbness of an arm or leg; severe stomach pain; or pus or bleeding at the implant site. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.
