Common Uses of Calcitonin:This medicine is a hormone used to treat Paget's disease of the bone. It is also used to treat high blood calcium levels. It may also be used to treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and other conditions as determined by your doctor.
How To Use Calcitonin:Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. This medicine is used as an injection. A health care professional will provide detailed instructions for appropriate use of this medicine. Ask any questions that you may have about this medicine or giving injections. STORE THIS MEDICINE in the refrigerator. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.
Calcitonin Cautions:KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are taking this medicine. IF YOU ARE USING THIS MEDICINE TO TREAT HIGH BLOOD CALCIUM LEVELS, your doctor may want you to follow a low-calcium diet. If you have questions about this, check with your doctor. IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED in breast milk. IF YOU ARE OR WILL BE BREAST-FEEDING while you are using this medicine, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.
Possible Side Effects of Calcitonin:SIDE EFFECTS, that may go away during treatment, include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, loss of appetite, redness or pain at injection site, flushing of the face or hands, metallic taste in mouth, or increased frequency of urination. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience swelling of the tongue or throat, difficulty breathing, or skin rash. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.
