Common Uses of Actiq:This medicine is an opioid analgesic used only for the management of breakthrough cancer pain in patients who are tolerant to opioid therapy. Do not use this medicine for short term pain caused by injury or surgery.
How To Use Actiq:Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. This medicine comes with a safe storage container and a patient information leaflet. Read it carefully. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist any questions that you may have about this medicine. Use scissors to open the package immediately before use. Using the attached handle, place the unit in the mouth between cheek and lower gum, occasionally moving it from one side of the mouth to the other. Allow the unit to dissolve over 15 minutes by sucking on the unit. Do not swallow, crush, or chew the unit. Excess saliva should be swallowed. Do not eat, drink, or smoke while the unit is dissolving. IF EXCESS DROWSINESS, SLOWED BREATHING, OR DIZZINESS occur before dose is used, use handle to remove the unit from mouth and dispose of immediately. Do not save or reuse partially used doses. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) in the original package, away from heat, moisture, and light.
Actiq Cautions:DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED DOSE or use this medicine for longer than prescribed without checking with your doctor. AVOID ALCOHOL while you are using this medicine. This medicine will add to the effects of alcohol and other depressants. DO NOT DRIVE, OPERATE MACHINERY, OR DO ANYTHING ELSE THAT COULD BE DANGEROUS until you know how you react to this medicine. Using this medicine alone, with other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks. This medicine contains sugar and may increase your risk of developing cavities. Maintain good oral hygiene (e.g., brushing and flossing). BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. This includes antihistamines. Caution should be used in the elderly since they may be more sensitive to the effects of this drug. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED IN BREAST MILK. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking this medicine.
Possible Side Effects of Actiq:SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while taking this medicine include drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, nausea, or dizziness. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you experience excessive drowsiness, slowed breathing, or dizziness. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience weakness, fatigue, fainting, seizures, unusually slow heartbeat, or trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.
